Kate O’Connor of Northern Ireland currently sits in first place in the Commonwealth Games heptathlon held in Glasgow. After completing the first four events, she is positioned to secure a gold medal as the competition nears its conclusion.
O’Connor secured a victory in her 200-metre heat, allowing her to overtake England’s Jade O’Dowda. O’Dowda currently trails by 55 points as the athletes faced wet conditions at Scotstoun Stadium. While Australia’s Mia Scerri holds third place, Niamh Emerson from England remains close enough to contest for a podium finish.
The competition will wrap up on Wednesday with the javelin, long jump, and 800m events. With Katarina Johnson-Thompson, the winner from the 2022 Birmingham Games, withdrawing from the event, the path is clear for a new Commonwealth heptathlon champion to be crowned for the first time in eight years.
