Barrister Muhuyi Magaji Rimin Gado, head of the Kano State Taskforce Committee on the Control of Drug Abuse and Illicit Substances, states that narcotics consumption is a primary driver of criminal behavior and gang-related unrest in Kano. During a Tuesday media briefing, Magaji noted that the Kano State Government launched this multi-sectoral initiative under an Executive Order from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to tackle substance trafficking and abuse.
The committee is tasked with dismantling illicit supply chains, providing rehabilitation for those struggling with addiction, and pursuing legal action against traffickers. Magaji emphasized that criminal activity is intrinsically linked to drug use, as impaired individuals are more likely to participate in theft or violence. He specifically identified local street gangs, known as Daba, as groups whose clashes are frequently fueled by substance use.
Magaji expressed frustration regarding interference from parents and politicians who attempt to protect suspects from legal consequences. He warned that such obstructions hinder state security efforts. The chairman affirmed that the taskforce will operate without political influence, emphasizing that no compromises will be made in their mission. He concluded by calling on parents and community members to take greater responsibility in safeguarding youths from the dangers of drug addiction.
