The government of Abia State has overseen the 2026 First School Leaving Certificate examination for 34 prisoners located in the Umuahia and Aba Correctional facilities. Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, announced this update on Tuesday following a State Executive Council meeting led by Governor Alex Otti.
According to Kanu, the Abia State Agency for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, managed by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, organized the testing process for these adult students. This program highlights the administration’s goal of providing educational opportunities to all residents, even those currently serving sentences.
The breakdown of participants shows 15 prisoners from Umuahia and 19 from Aba took the test. Additionally, Commissioner Kanu noted that Governor Otti ordered prompt action to address gully erosion challenges at the Amamba-Uzuakoli and Ipupe-Ubakala locations.
