Sunday Adeyemo, the Yoruba Nation activist recognized as Sunday Igboho, has recounted the night Department of State Services agents raided his Ibadan home in July 2021. He asserts that he never left the property despite the intensive search conducted by security forces. During a meeting with Muslim clerics, Igboho claimed that operatives failed to spot him even as they moved through his residence, eventually killing a cat they mistook for him and employing a fake traditionalist to perform rituals to locate him.
Igboho described the chaos of the 1:30 am raid, noting that agents used explosives to breach his room. He recalled being armed but choosing not to engage, hidden while hearing the intruders threaten his personal assistant. He explicitly denied myths regarding his ability to shapeshift, attributing his survival instead to divine intervention and prayers. The raid resulted in the deaths of two associates, and the DSS later reported the seizure of weapons and the arrest of 13 individuals.
The operation followed rising tensions between Igboho and the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, driven by Igboho’s campaign to expel criminal elements from Yorubaland. Following the raid, Igboho fled Nigeria but was later apprehended in Benin Republic. He was eventually released from custody and currently remains in exile, where he persists with his political advocacy.
