Aliko Dangote Plans to Commit One-Third of Wealth to Philanthropy

Aliko Dangote is set to donate one-third of his massive fortune to charitable causes, a decision his daughter Halima says will secure his philanthropic legacy for future generations.

Halima Dangote, the daughter of African billionaire Aliko Dangote, has revealed that her father intends to dedicate one-third of his total wealth to charitable activities. This move is a fundamental component of his long-term succession strategy.

Speaking with Bloomberg, Halima, who serves as a trustee for the Aliko Dangote Foundation, confirmed that the family has fully supported this commitment to assign 33 percent of his estate to philanthropy. With a net worth currently estimated at $35.1 billion by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, this contribution would equate to roughly $11.7 billion.

Halima explained that her father views charitable giving as an essential part of his legacy and has integrated it into the family’s inheritance structure. She noted that this arrangement aligns with principles in Islamic Sharia law, ensuring that the foundation maintains its impact across future generations. To formalize this, he requested that his mother and three daughters sign a document confirming his intention to allocate this portion of his wealth to humanity.

The Aliko Dangote Foundation, launched in 1994, has already received significant endowments, including $1.25 billion previously and an additional $700 million in more recent years. The majority of the foundation’s funds, roughly 70 percent, are utilized for initiatives within Nigeria, while the rest supports projects throughout Africa and other global locations. The foundation focuses on humanitarian relief, nutrition, education, and healthcare, notably collaborating with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help eliminate wild polio from Africa. Recognition for these efforts recently earned Aliko Dangote a spot on the inaugural TIME100 Philanthropy list.
