British tennis player Cameron Norrie has broken a frustrating six-match losing skid by defeating Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4, 6-1 in the opening round of the Mifel Open in Mexico. Currently ranked 39th globally, Norrie had not celebrated a win since the Madrid Open earlier this spring, a drought that included an early departure from Wimbledon.
Returning to the Los Cabos venue where he claimed his maiden ATP title in 2021, Norrie overcame two early service breaks in the first set to regain his rhythm. He dominated the second set, losing only five points on his serve, and ultimately set up a second-round clash against either James Duckworth or Aidan Mayo. Norrie expressed relief after the match, noting that his recent struggles stemmed from both physical injuries and a lack of self-assurance. He successfully managed his nerves during critical points to advance.
Elsewhere, British women’s number two Katie Boulter suffered a setback at the Citi Open in Washington DC. Despite leading in the final set, Boulter fell to Ashlyn Krueger in a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 loss, marking her fourth consecutive defeat.
