The Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has cautioned the Ondo State administration that clearing overdue wages is insufficient to avert future labor disputes. The union insists that the state must adopt the 2025 federal agreement to avoid further shutdowns.
Dr. Boluwaji Oshodi, the union chair, confirmed that local protocols for a new strike are finalized. They now await authorization from national leadership to proceed, which would potentially affect AAUA, the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), and the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED). AAUA staff have been off the job since July 10 due to unpaid salaries for May, June, and July.
While reports suggest Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has authorized funds to pay these arrears, Dr. Oshodi maintained that the union requires actual payment confirmation before resuming duties. Furthermore, he emphasized that failing to implement the 2025 federal agreement—which other institutions have already adopted—remains a major point of contention that could trigger a widespread, severe strike across all three state-owned universities.
University management has encouraged students to remain patient, noting that the governor has provided a special fund to assist with outstanding financial commitments.
