The Imo State Police Command has taken Dike Chibuike Micheal into custody following a fatal accident involving an unauthorized street race. The incident took place on the evening of July 26, 2026, near the main entrance of Imo State University in Owerri.
Authorities identified the deceased as 19-year-old Chibuike Friday, a trader from Ebonyi State. A second victim, Bright Ukwuoma, suffered significant injuries and is currently undergoing medical treatment. Witnesses reported that the suspect, driving a Lexus ES 350, lost control while speeding during the illicit racing event, striking both individuals as they crossed the road.
Police spokesperson DSP Henry Okoye confirmed that responding officers from the Orji Division arrived shortly after the collision. They managed to arrest the 30-year-old suspect and protect him from an agitated crowd gathered at the scene. Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso has condemned the dangerous behavior, offering his condolences to the bereaved family. An official investigation is underway, and the department has pledged to hold the suspect accountable through the judicial process.
