A commercial tricyclist has died following a fatal head-on collision with a wrong-way driver along the Badagry Expressway, Lagos State.

The incident occurred at Origan, Oko-Afo, and involved a commercial tricycle with registration number MUS 716 QM and a Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC SUV carrying the customized plate “OSUNFNKE.” According to Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the SUV was driving against traffic from Ile-Epo toward Oko-Afo when it struck the tricycle.

The tricyclist sustained severe injuries, including a dislocated knee, and was confirmed dead at the scene.

LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Taofiq Adebayo, stated that the SUV driver abandoned the vehicle and fled. Both the damaged tricycle and SUV were removed to ease traffic and handed over to the police at Morogbo Division for investigation and likely prosecution.

Bakare-Oki condemned the reckless driving, describing it as a gross violation of traffic laws that cost a life. He reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to road safety through enforcement and public sensitisation, and extended condolences to the victim’s family.

The agency urged all motorists to desist from dangerous practices like one-way driving, warning that they are not only illegal but can also lead to avoidable tragedies.
