Babachir Lawal, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has suggested that President Bola Tinubu intends to pursue a third term in office, provided he remains in good health. Lawal expressed deep skepticism regarding the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process, asserting that free and fair elections are a thing of the past.
During an appearance on Symponi TV, Lawal contended that political parties routinely manipulate their primary processes. He warned that this trend of corruption will likely influence the 2027 general elections. According to Lawal, the Independent National Electoral Commission is expected to merely announce pre-determined results, regardless of actual voting activity.
The former official further predicted that citizens might eventually stop participating in the voting process altogether, choosing to stay home while legal battles unfold between candidates. He noted that the public’s frustration would likely manifest as post-election protests rather than active civic engagement. Ultimately, Lawal reiterated his belief that Tinubu is positioning himself for an extended stay in power, contingent on his longevity.
