Andrea Pirlo, currently the manager of Dubai United, has confirmed he is no longer being considered for the head coaching position of the Italian national football team. This development follows widespread backlash regarding his affiliation with a Russian betting firm.
Although the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) had not officially announced his hiring, his appointment was widely anticipated. However, prominent Italian politicians voiced significant opposition over the weekend, specifically highlighting Pirlo’s role as a global ambassador for Fonbet, a Russian betting company. The firm has been linked to sporting events involving Russian military veterans and has hosted gatherings where Pirlo appeared alongside figures supportive of the Kremlin.
Politician Carlo Calenda argued that individuals promoting Russia following the 2022 invasion should not occupy national positions. In a statement released on Instagram, Pirlo expressed bitterness, clarifying that his work with the Dubai-based club was strictly professional and athletic. He rejected any political interpretation of his commercial ventures.
Critics, including European Parliament vice-president Pina Picierno, suggested that Italian football requires an ethical shift, implying that Pirlo’s involvement with Russian entities was contradictory to these needs. Conversely, Russian ambassador to Rome, Aleksey Paramonov, lamented the criticism directed at the former midfielder.
The controversy stems partly from Pirlo’s appearance at a Moscow event last spring at the Luzhniki Stadium, where he interacted with individuals linked to the war effort. This incident drew condemnation from figures such as Ukrainian athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych. The situation has now placed pressure on new FIGC technical director Paolo Maldini, who oversaw the search for a new coach following recent struggles for the Italian team. Reports suggest officials may now turn their attention to other candidates like Antonio Conte or Roberto Mancini.
