Former Vice President and political figure Atiku Abubakar contends that President Bola Tinubu has begun utilizing a power sector strategy he proposed over twenty years ago to address the country’s persistent electricity issues. This assertion was made public by Atiku’s aide, Phrank Shaibu, during a weekend announcement.
Atiku argues that comments made by Power Minister Joseph Tegbe, which acknowledge that Nigeria must move away from total reliance on centralized power stations, reflect the decentralized generation model he has supported since the early 2000s. He criticized the current administration for taking three years to recognize this necessity.
The former Vice President suggested that the government prioritized increasing utility tariffs before implementing the essential reforms needed to improve the grid. He noted that during his time in office, he repeatedly advised then-President Olusegun Obasanjo to diversify the nation’s energy production by investing in solar, gas, and hydroelectric infrastructure, maintaining that this approach remains the most viable solution for Nigeria today.
