Babachir Lawal, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has alleged that President Bola Tinubu personally covered the costs of Yemi Osinbajo’s vice-presidential campaign during the 2015 election. Speaking in an interview with Symfoni TV, Lawal stated that these financial contributions were separate from the central budget of the All Progressives Congress.
Lawal explained that Osinbajo’s campaign operated with a degree of autonomy to address concerns among Christian and ethnic groups regarding Muhammadu Buhari’s candidacy. According to the former official, Tinubu took full financial responsibility for these specific activities.
Furthermore, Lawal asserted that Tinubu paid over two billion naira to a team of American political consultants, reportedly associated with former U.S. President Barack Obama, to modernize the party’s strategy. He maintained that Tinubu frequently utilized his own personal wealth for major campaign expenditures rather than relying on party funds, noting his firsthand observation of these events.
