The National Sports Commission (NSC) has officially raised the performance-based bonuses and immediate cash incentives for Nigerian competitors at the 2026 Commonwealth Games currently held in Glasgow, Scotland. Kehinde Ajayi, the director of information for the commission, released a statement on Saturday confirming the adjustment.
Shehu Dikko, the NSC Chairman, explained that the policy shift aims to boost the morale of Team Nigeria members. Gold medallists are now entitled to 10,000 dollars, with half provided immediately as cash and the remainder deposited into their bank accounts. Silver medallists will receive 5,000 dollars total, split into 2,000 dollars of instant cash and 3,000 dollars via bank transfer. Meanwhile, bronze winners will earn 3,000 dollars, divided into 1,000 dollars in cash and a 2,000-dollar bank credit.
The previous arrangement offered 8,000 dollars for gold, and the adjustment comes after Dikko visited the athletes in Aberdeen. Three gold medallists from Friday have already received the increased 10,000-dollar sum. Furthermore, Saturday’s gold and silver winners have also been compensated according to the new scale.
Coaches are also included in the incentive scheme, earning 5,000 dollars for every athlete they guide to a gold medal. Daily stipends have been set at 200 dollars for athletes and 250 dollars for coaches. Additionally, the commission maintains the flexibility to offer performance-based bonuses, such as the special reward granted to Rilwan Idris to encourage his success. These improved measures are intended to provide comprehensive support for the Nigerian delegation throughout the tournament.
