The Benue State Ministry of Health and Human Services has initiated an inquiry into potential Mpox cases within the Korinya area of Konshisha Local Government Area. This action follows a formal request from local residents in the Tyokula Achihi area who reported an unidentified skin condition spreading quickly among neighbors.
In a document dated July 25, 2026, community spokesperson Shadrach Mtsor described individuals suffering from fevers, severe rashes, and blisters on their faces and bodies. The residents expressed concern that the illness is moving through households and lacks adequate isolation or medical oversight. Consequently, they urged organizations including the WHO, NCDC, and the Nigerian Red Cross to provide testing, isolation resources, and specialized medical support.
Dr. Paul Ogwuche, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, confirmed that the ministry has mobilized its disease surveillance team. The local Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer has been dispatched to Korinya to examine the situation and gather clinical samples for laboratory verification. Dr. Ogwuche emphasized that no Mpox cases have been officially confirmed in the state, noting that symptoms like rashes and fever can stem from various illnesses.
The administration, under Governor Hyacinth Alia, continues to monitor all 23 local government areas in partnership with national and international health agencies. Officials have advised the public to avoid panic, stop the circulation of unconfirmed rumors, and report any symptoms such as unexplained blisters to medical facilities immediately. The ministry has pledged to disclose laboratory findings once they become available and will take necessary steps to ensure public safety.
