Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has expressed strong disapproval regarding the recent lethal assaults in Benue and Plateau states. He characterized the ongoing violence as both unacceptable and deeply distressing. In a statement posted on social media, the former Anambra State governor highlighted that the persistent instability in these regions demands immediate and precise action from government officials.
Obi cited the recent deaths of sixteen individuals in Benue’s Otukpo-Nobi community and the killing of nine family members, including an infant, in Plateau’s Riyom area as evidence of a long-standing cycle of carnage. He emphasized that citizens in these areas face constant threats, leading to widespread displacement and community destruction. According to Obi, the government must prioritize the security of lives and property over routine expressions of sympathy.
He urged for a transition toward a proactive security model that utilizes better intelligence and rapid response capabilities to stop attacks before they happen. Furthermore, Obi demanded that those responsible for these crimes be held accountable through the justice system to eliminate a culture of impunity. He concluded by offering his condolences to the affected families and stressed that securing the nation is a fundamental humanitarian issue necessary for progress.
