President Tinubu introduces initiative to integrate diaspora medical expertise into national healthcare

President Tinubu has launched the Diaspora Health Impact Initiative to leverage the medical expertise of Nigerians abroad to strengthen the nation’s local health systems.

President Bola Tinubu has formally recognized Nigerians living abroad as a primary national asset, unveiling a strategy to integrate their medical expertise into the domestic healthcare framework. Represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, the President shared these plans during the 2026 National Diaspora Day and Merit Award dinner. The event, hosted by the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) under Abike Dabiri-Erewa, focused on utilizing global medical talent to improve local health infrastructure.

As part of his Renewed Hope Agenda, President Tinubu introduced the Diaspora Health Impact Initiative 2026. This collaborative effort between NiDCOM and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare aims to deploy medical professionals to each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. The government intends to establish a formal platform to coordinate these efforts, providing incentives for experts who return home to practice or invest while ensuring project transparency.

Tinubu emphasized that Nigerian professionals in fields like medicine and technology are vital to his administration’s foreign policy goals. He encouraged diaspora members in locations ranging from London to Johannesburg to contribute their skills toward building a more resilient and equitable healthcare system for the country.
