At the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Folashade Oluwafemiayo secured the gold medal in the Women’s Heavyweight Para Powerlifting competition. According to the DAILY POST, she established a new world record by hoisting 175kg, resulting in a total score of 134.8 points.
Rita Ferdinand, her teammate, took home the silver medal after successfully lifting 158kg. Ferdinand also exceeded the former world record, ensuring a historic one-two finish for Nigeria. The bronze medal went to Australia’s Hani Watson, who recorded a lift of 111.5kg.
This performance represented Nigeria’s second instance of taking the top two spots in para powerlifting throughout the day. Earlier, Esther Nworgu and Esther Oyema achieved gold and silver in the women’s lightweight division. Furthermore, Roland Ezuruike contributed to the country’s success by winning a silver medal during the men’s lightweight event on the first day.
