Scottish Swimmers Secure Rapid Medal Haul to Open Glasgow 2026

Scotland experienced a sensational beginning to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, clinching four medals including two golds during an intense period of competition in the pool.

Scotland enjoyed a spectacular start to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing three medals within a frantic 45-minute window at the Tollcross pool. An additional gold medal followed an hour later, cementing a highly successful opening day for the host nation.

Duncan Scott led the charge by successfully defending his 200m individual medley title from the Birmingham Games, setting a new record in the process. This performance added to his impressive tally, bringing his career total to 14 Commonwealth medals since his debut in 2014.

Para-swimmer Stephen Clegg overcame a difficult, injury-prone year to claim silver in the 100m freestyle S13, while his brother James finished fourth. Shortly after, Katie Shanahan improved on her previous bronze performance by securing silver in the 200m backstroke, edging ahead of teammate Holly McGill.

The momentum continued when Faye Rogers dominated the 200m individual medley SM10, securing a second gold medal for Scotland and prompting another celebratory rendition of the national anthem. These results provided a significant morale boost for the home crowd during the early stages of the event.
