President Mohammed Shahabuddin of Bangladesh has officially resigned from his position, attributing the decision to declining physical and mental well-being. The 76-year-old leader, often referred to as Chuppu, submitted a formal letter to the parliamentary speaker confirming his departure before his term was set to conclude in 2028.
Elected in 2023 with the backing of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League, Shahabuddin had faced significant public pressure to step down following the 2024 student-led uprising that removed the former prime minister from power. Critics had previously scrutinized his alleged communications with the former premier, a claim he consistently dismissed.
Regarding the procedural requirements for his exit, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed had previously stated that any resignation must be formally delivered to the speaker of parliament under constitutional guidelines. Despite early uncertainty from government officials, the president confirmed his intent to vacate the role directly.
