Two promising Northern Irish boxers, Jon McConnell and Kaci Rock, faced an unusual dilemma this summer: choose between the bright lights of reality television or the competitive stage of the Commonwealth Games. Although both athletes advanced through the early casting stages of the popular show Love Island, they ultimately withdrew once their selection for the Commonwealth team was confirmed.
McConnell is set to challenge India’s Sumit Sumit in the light-middleweight division on Monday, while Rock, representing Holy Trinity, will square off against Niue’s Karen Te Ruki Pasene on Tuesday. For Rock, who is the daughter of decorated boxer Jim Rock, prioritizing her sporting career was an easy decision. She remains focused on building a legacy in the ring rather than on screen.
While Rock has ruled out future attempts to join the reality program, McConnell jokingly suggested he might be open to an invitation—provided he secures a gold medal first. The two athletes are among five in the Northern Ireland squad currently within striking distance of a podium finish.
