The government of Anambra State has launched a plea bargain program for individuals facing criminal charges. This initiative intends to expedite legal proceedings and lower the number of pending cases within the court system. However, this option is strictly unavailable to those accused of serious offenses, including murder, kidnapping, rape, and armed robbery.
Tobechukwu Nweke, the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, noted that this change adheres to Section 156 of the 2022 Administration of Criminal Justice Law. He has instructed prosecutors to provide the necessary paperwork to qualifying defendants. All submitted agreements will undergo review by the Ministry of Justice, and any cases filed without following these new instructions may face dismissal.
Dr. Ebuka Onyekwelu, media aide to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, stated that this policy is part of the governor’s broader plan to modernize judicial operations and improve efficiency. This reform fulfills a key component of Governor Soludo’s pledge to work with judicial and legislative bodies to streamline the legal process.
