Axel Rudakubana, the individual responsible for the fatal attack on a dance group in Southport, has been relocated from prison to a high-security psychiatric hospital. The Ministry of Justice confirmed the shift from HMP Belmarsh to Broadmoor in Berkshire. Rudakubana was convicted for the 2024 tragedy that claimed the lives of Elsie Dot Stancombe, Bebe King, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, while also leaving ten others wounded.
Although sentenced in 2025 to 52 years, Rudakubana’s age at the time of the crime prevented a life sentence. Officials emphasized that this move is strictly for medical reasons following independent clinical reviews. He is expected to return to the prison system once deemed fit, and his sentence duration remains unchanged. Broadmoor is known for significantly higher operating costs compared to standard incarceration, with annual expenses estimated at over £270,000 per patient.
This transfer comes after a period of volatility during his imprisonment, including a reported assault on a staff member in May 2025. Evidence presented during the Southport Public Inquiry has highlighted Rudakubana’s complex history with mental health and documented patterns of violent behavior.
