Amnesty International has denounced the legal proceedings against Omoyele Sowore, the former presidential candidate for the African Action Congress, as entirely fraudulent. During an appearance on News Central Television, Isa Sanusi, the organization’s Nigeria Country Director, characterized the defamation case involving President Bola Tinubu as a deceptive move.
Sanusi argued that Sowore is experiencing targeted mistreatment and ongoing abuses of his fundamental rights. He asserted that the accusations lack any legitimate basis in either the Nigerian constitution or global human rights standards. The organization urged the federal government to prioritize pressing national issues like corruption, poverty, and insecurity instead of using the judiciary to intimidate dissenters. Ultimately, Amnesty International called for an end to these judicial tactics and insisted that activists be permitted to exercise their right to free expression without fear of state-sponsored harassment.
