The Federal High Court in Abuja turned down an attempt by Bello Bodejo, the leader of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, to lower his N2 billion bail terms on Thursday. Justice Inyang Ekwo decided against hearing the motion after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) submitted a formal objection, noting that the impending court recess would prevent a timely resolution.
Bodejo currently faces charges of money laundering related to approximately $2.63 million connected to the Bauchi State administration. His legal representative, Mohammed Sheriff, had pushed for a modification of the original requirements, which mandate two sureties—one owning property worth N2 billion in Abuja and the other demonstrating three years of tax compliance.
Fatai Erewunmi, appearing for the EFCC, confirmed the agency had filed a counter-affidavit against the request. Justice Ekwo suggested that legal teams address the issue before a vacation judge during the upcoming break, as the primary trial is set to resume on October 5.
Prosecutors allege that Bodejo violated national anti-money laundering regulations by accepting substantial foreign currency payments, including $100,000 from a former Bauchi State official, which bypasses authorized banking channels and exceeds the N5 million legal limit.
