The Abia State branch of the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria has identified a lack of legal counsel and financial hardships as the primary reasons behind the extended detention of youths in local correctional centers. Obinna Odenigbo, the organization’s state coordinator, noted that these factors, combined with systemic delays in the justice system, are fueling prison congestion.
During a discussion in Umuahia with the Abia State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba, Odenigbo emphasized that many young people remain incarcerated for minor offenses. He shared the story of a skilled inmate whose potential is currently wasted, asserting that such individuals should be contributing to the state economy instead of lingering in jail. The meeting sought a partnership between the Ministry and the Council to improve youth access to justice.
Commissioner Ananaba welcomed the proposal and confirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting programs that provide youths with a second chance. He highlighted that the administration of Governor Alex Otti is actively implementing programs aimed at reducing unemployment and steering young people away from criminal behavior.
