Jamyou Sanni, a Nigerian who recently returned from South Africa, described a violent encounter where he was targeted for talking to a local woman. Speaking on Vanguard’s The Nigerian Metre Podcast, Sanni detailed how he was ambushed outside a bar by a group of men who took offense to a woman approaching him. He claimed the attackers threw him to the ground and likely would have killed him if not for a white police officer who intervened by firing shots from a nearby balcony, causing the mob to flee.
Despite this harrowing event, Sanni stated that many South Africans treated him with kindness throughout his residency. He rejected widespread claims that Nigerians are responsible for job shortages or stealing local partners. Sanni argued that many South African women prefer Nigerian men because they are perceived as more attentive. Furthermore, he suggested that the local unemployment issue stems from a lack of desire to work, noting that he was actually an employer rather than a job seeker during his time in the country.
