Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called upon the Ibru family to uphold the unity and core principles that defined their prominent business dynasty. Speaking at the Lagos unveiling of The Ibru Story, a biography written by Mike Awoyinfa, Obasanjo emphasized that collective spirit and discipline were the defining traits of the late Michael Ibru.
Obasanjo shared personal anecdotes about the late entrepreneur, noting his unique approach to leadership, which centered on delegation rather than micromanagement. He recalled advice from Michael Ibru on managing staff, noting that the businessman preferred to accept minor losses rather than exhaust himself by pursuing every error. This perspective taught the former president that leaders often burn out when they attempt to oversee every small detail.
The former president also shared a cautionary tale regarding international aid, citing a past conversation with former Angolan leader Agostinho Neto. He argued that countries must remain vigilant about the conditions attached to foreign support, specifically noting how Soviet influence in Angola’s fishing industry stifled local potential. Regarding the book, Obasanjo praised its focus on familial cohesion, urging current patriarch Goodie Ibru to continue prioritizing reconciliation to ensure the family’s enduring influence.
Goodie Ibru explained that the book project became urgent as the family realized that memories and historical documents were at risk of being lost. He noted that the publication is intended to inspire future generations by highlighting the family’s dedication to service, faith, and hard work. Proceeds from the book will benefit the Ibru Foundation to support community development.
Author Mike Awoyinfa described the work as a strategic guide, providing a roadmap of the sacrifices and principles that built the family empire. Prof. Godini Darah, who reviewed the publication, emphasized its value in documenting African entrepreneurship and challenging negative stereotypes by showcasing a successful, diversified Nigerian conglomerate. The launch event was attended by various dignitaries and business leaders, all gathered to honor the significant contributions of the Ibru legacy to the nation’s economic landscape.
