Vice President Kashim Shettima praised the current advancement of Nigeria’s digital identity landscape during a meeting at the Presidential Villa. He attributed these improvements to the strategic reforms initiated by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) under the leadership of Engr. Abisoye Odusote.
Shettima emphasized that the NIMC Act 2026 is critical to this transition, moving Nigeria away from outdated paper records toward a secure, sovereign Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). He commended Odusote for rapidly evolving the commission into a foundational digital authority and encouraged the staff to continue supporting these technology-focused initiatives to further the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The administration aims to leverage these digital advancements to enhance public services across sectors like healthcare, education, and finance. During the visit, Engr. Odusote noted that the new legislation allows different government databases to interface effectively, improving public service delivery. She highlighted that the National Identification Number (NIN) has become the primary verification tool for passport services, insurance firms, and financial institutions. This shift ensures Nigeria maintains national control over its digital trust framework, significantly decreasing dependency on foreign entities.
