The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is advocating for closer partnerships between African telecommunications regulators to enhance the quality of data and market insights used in regional policy. During the Heads of Regulators Roundtable at the African Telecommunications Union conference in Abuja, Dr. Maida emphasized that effective regulation is vital for economic expansion and digital modernization across Africa.
Dr. Maida highlighted that despite varied legal structures, nations across the continent encounter identical hurdles, such as cybersecurity threats, infrastructure expansion, and the rise of artificial intelligence. He argued that formalizing knowledge exchanges would allow agencies to tackle complex policy obstacles by learning from the successes and failures of their neighbors.
Rimini Makama, the NCC’s Executive Commissioner for Stakeholder Management, noted that the increasing complexity of digital ecosystems—driven by satellite services and cloud computing—necessitates a shift away from legacy regulatory methods. She pointed out that while data availability is increasing, the primary task is converting raw metrics into practical tools that improve regulatory performance. The roundtable serves as a strategic effort to foster a more resilient, innovation-friendly, and consumer-centered communication environment throughout Africa.
