LASTMA Apprehends Tanker Driver Following Fatal Hit-and-Run in Ikeja

LASTMA officers apprehended a tanker driver who attempted to escape after causing a fatal collision that killed a commercial delivery motorcyclist in the Ikeja region of Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has taken a tanker driver into custody after he allegedly struck and killed a delivery motorcycle rider before attempting to flee the scene. The tragic accident happened on Kodesho Road, situated near the MRS Filling Station, in the Ikeja area of Lagos.

Official reports indicate the vehicle involved was a tanker, license plate T-19089LA, which was transporting 33 litres of groundnut oil. The impact proved fatal for the delivery rider, who died immediately. The driver tried to abandon the site without rendering aid or notifying authorities, but LASTMA officers pursued and apprehended him shortly after receiving an alert.

The suspect and his vehicle were turned over to the State Traffic Department at the Area F Police Command in Ikeja for ongoing investigation and legal proceedings. LASTMA personnel also managed the accident scene to prevent further traffic congestion while facilitating emergency operations.

General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended his condolences to the victim’s family, calling the event a preventable tragedy. He urged drivers of heavy-duty vehicles to prioritize safety, professionalism, and strict adherence to traffic laws to prevent similar outcomes. Bakare-Oki emphasized that reckless behavior behind the wheel carries significant legal risks and endangers public safety.
