Authorities in Cross River State have taken 39-year-old Udeme Emmanuel Ekpeme into custody for posing as a physician. The suspect allegedly swindled a woman out of N500,000 by promising to secure employment for her children at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.
Police spokesperson ASP Sunday Eitokpah confirmed the arrest on Tuesday in Calabar. The operation was carried out by officers from the Uwanse Division after a formal complaint was filed by Mrs. Edemawan Samuel. She reported that Ekpeme convinced her of his medical credentials to finalize the fraudulent transaction.
Police have confiscated various items related to the alleged crimes, and the suspect remains detained. Commissioner of Police Rashid Afegbua has directed a comprehensive investigation into the matter to identify potential accomplices or other victims. Officials plan to prosecute the case once the inquiry is complete. This incident follows a similar recent arrest in Edo State involving an individual accused of illegal medical practice and human trafficking.
