A recent thanksgiving banquet at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja celebrated the inauguration of 31 projects across the Federal Capital Territory. During the event, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, described current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike as the most effective leader in the territory’s five-decade history. This sentiment was echoed by former FCT minister Dr. Aliyu Modibo, who identified Wike, along with Hamza Abdullahi and Gado Nasko, as the top three administrators to have held the office.
Having resided in Abuja since 1988, I have witnessed the tenures of 12 out of the 17 ministers who have served the territory. The current administration has distinguished itself through three primary pillars: rapid project execution, equitable development, and the restoration of the original master plan. While previous administrations often focused exclusively on high-profile central districts, Wike has prioritized infrastructure across satellite towns, ensuring the 8,000 square kilometer territory receives consistent attention regarding roads, lighting, and security.
During the event, Wike humbly credited his predecessors for their ideas while attributing his success to the supportive leadership and mentorship provided by President Tinubu. By focusing on both the functional needs of residents and the aesthetic integrity of the capital, the current leadership is successfully repositioning Abuja as a viable investment destination. Based on observations of infrastructure delivery and policy implementation, the recognition of Wike’s performance as the most impactful in the capital’s history appears grounded in objective reality.
