On Tuesday, the Ogun State House of Assembly officially cleared former Speaker Olakunle Oluomo of embezzlement charges. This decision followed a review by an ad hoc committee regarding his January 23, 2024, removal from his leadership position.
Deputy Speaker Lateefat Bolanle Ajayi presented the report after Oluomo filed a motion on March 31, 2026, requesting a formal review of the accusations. Following a voice vote supported by the full House, the legislature determined that the embezzlement claims were never part of the initial impeachment notice and lacked supporting evidence. Under section 36 of the 1999 Constitution, the House found these financial allegations unsubstantiated.
Consequently, the Assembly has officially dropped the embezzlement charges. In an effort to promote unity and camaraderie, the lawmakers reversed the original impeachment of Oluomo and reclassified his exit from the role as a voluntary resignation.
Oluomo, representing the Ifo State Constituency, was originally ousted by 18 of the 26 members during a session chaired by Ajayi. While he was previously accused of gross misconduct and financial mismanagement, this new resolution restores his standing by converting the forced removal into a formal resignation.
