The Lagos State Government has pledged to resolve recent waste collection delays by upgrading critical disposal sites and expanding its fleet. The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) is currently repairing Road E at the Olusosun dumpsite in Ojota, a move designed to restore efficient access for garbage trucks and speed up daily operations.
LAWMA Managing Director Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin explained that severe rainfall recently damaged access routes at the site, which handles nearly 10,000 metric tonnes of waste every day. The rehabilitation project, supported by Zoomlion Nigeria, aims to clear bottlenecks and reduce vehicle turnaround times.
While officials plan to eventually replace the Olusosun site with a waste-to-energy initiative, Dr. Gbadegesin noted that this transition will only occur once new infrastructure is ready. To bridge this gap, the government is building two modern Transfer Loading Stations at Olusosun and Solous III, each capable of processing 2,500 tonnes of waste daily.
Addressing fleet shortages, the state government intends to acquire 3,000 new compactor trucks over the next three years. The initial phase, arriving later this year, includes 150 compactors specifically designed for navigating narrow streets. Dr. Gbadegesin emphasized that this expansion will bolster Private Sector Participant (PSP) services and improve overall sanitation across the state. He urged residents to remain patient as the administration continues to modernize waste infrastructure under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
