Attorneys for Nnamdi Kanu, the incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, have vowed to take legal steps against television guest Chigozie Nnabugwu and News Central Television. This decision follows remarks Nnabugwu made during a program where he suggested the Federal Government should kill Kanu to restore order in the Southeast.
Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s special counsel, issued a statement on Tuesday denouncing the comments. The lawyers referenced a video uploaded to the official X account of News Central TV on July 19 that has since circulated widely. They characterized the rhetoric as irresponsible and dangerous, noting that such statements could incite violence and threaten public peace.
The legal team pointed out potential violations of the Cybercrimes Act, specifically section 24(1), which addresses the transmission of messages that pose threats to human life. They also suggested that both the guest and the media outlet could be liable under the Criminal Code for inciting violence. Furthermore, they alleged that broadcasting such remarks while a trial is ongoing could be viewed as contempt of court.
The lawyers have warned that the broadcaster may face regulatory repercussions for violating codes regarding public safety. They are now evaluating further legal remedies and have issued a formal demand for a public retraction from Nnabugwu and an apology from the network. This statement serves as a pre-action notice, indicating that formal litigation will begin if these demands are not met immediately.
