The Northern Christian Association (NCA) has formally requested that the Federal Government justify the uneven distribution of funds in the proposed 2026 Appropriation Bill. The budget outlines approximately N8.05 billion for religious projects, a move that the association argues lacks the necessary balance and fairness expected from state institutions.
Rev. Joseph Hayab, the group’s chairman, stated that while the NCA does not object to state support for religious initiatives, such funding must align with constitutional mandates for equity and transparency. Data cited by the association shows that N1.91 billion is allocated for seven church projects, whereas 52 mosque projects are slated to receive about N6.14 billion.
Hayab expressed frustration, noting that this gap reflects a recurring pattern of bias in public policy. He cautioned that such imbalances damage national unity, foster distrust, and create divisions among citizens. According to the cleric, the government should avoid appearing to favor one religion over another, as the law requires equal treatment for all Nigerians regardless of their faith.
The NCA emphasized that its position is not a critique of Islam or religious collaboration with the state, but rather a demand for a balanced allocation of resources. The association has urged the government to review these budget lines to ensure they meet standards of fairness and help restore public confidence in federal governance.
