Operatives from the Edo State National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have taken a husband and wife into custody for their suspected involvement in illegal drug operations in Benin City. Dr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, the agency’s state commander, confirmed the arrests in a Monday statement.
Authorities identified the individuals as 32-year-old Christian Chukwuka and 33-year-old Nwanneka Christian, both originating from Delta State. They were apprehended during a search of a Sapele Road warehouse. During the raid, officers seized 22 bags of skunk cannabis weighing 219.5 kilograms alongside 192.67 kilograms of compressed Canadian loud, a potent synthetic variety of the drug.
According to Dr. Ofoyeju, the operation followed reliable intelligence regarding the couple’s illicit activities. He emphasized that the seizure underscores the agency’s mounting concern regarding the local drug trade. While in custody, Christian Chukwuka blamed his participation in the crime on financial hardship and unemployment, claiming he turned to trafficking to support his wife and their twins. He expressed remorse and requested leniency. The NDLEA confirmed that the suspects will face legal proceedings once the investigation concludes.
