The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) is urging the Nigeria Police Force to release a progress report regarding the death of Mary Habila. The incident occurred at the home of Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi. RULAAC argues that increased transparency is necessary to maintain public trust in the ongoing inquiry.
Executive Director Okechukwu Nwanguma stated that while RULAAC recognizes the police are currently investigating, the high level of public concern warrants clearer communication. Senator Umahi has already denied involvement and requested a forensic autopsy, and the police have confirmed that no criminal charges have been filed at this time.
RULAAC clarified that its inquiry is not an accusation against any individual but a demand for a fair, evidence-based investigation. The group has asked the police to confirm if a timeline of events has been established, if witness statements have been collected, and how the scene was managed. Additionally, they are seeking information on the handling of the deceased’s body.
The organization emphasized that legal proceedings must remain objective, regardless of an individual’s professional status. They continue to call for professional, law-abiding investigative practices to ensure justice is served and to strengthen faith in the Nigerian judicial process.
