Abubakar Abba, known as Abu Bara, who commanded the Al-Qaeda-linked group Ansaru, has received a life sentence from the Abuja Federal High Court. The Department of State Services (DSS) prosecuted Abba and his associate, Mahmud Usman—also known as Isah Adam or Mahmud—following a 32-count terrorism indictment.
On Monday, both men entered guilty pleas for the charges filed by the DSS on behalf of the Nigerian government. Justice Emeka Nwite presided over the sentencing, which mandated life imprisonment for counts 30 and 31, while assigning 20-year terms for the remaining counts, to be served concurrently starting from the time of their initial arrests between May and July 2025.
The comprehensive list of charges against the pair included terrorism financing, abduction for ransom, illegal mining operations, and the manufacturing of improvised explosive devices. Evidence presented indicated the men were responsible for managing sleeper cells and coordinating militant activities with various groups across the Sahel and Maghreb regions. Furthermore, Usman received a specific 15-year sentence after pleading guilty to a count of illegal mining conducted to fund terrorism and arms procurement.
