The Nigerian Presidency recently characterized the movement led by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, as a gathering of political extremists. Daniel Bwala, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, voiced this criticism while asserting that Obi has neglected to address the problematic conduct of his followers.
Bwala dismissed accusations that the government maintains an unhealthy obsession with the former Anambra governor. He clarified that his public statements are merely responses to inquiries triggered by controversial remarks from Obi’s supporters. He emphasized that the media often incorrectly frames these government responses as unprompted attacks.
Dismissing Obi as a political rival, Bwala declared that the candidate poses no real threat to President Tinubu. He stated that Obi is not a match for Asiwaju, claiming that past governors of Lagos have outperformed him. Despite this assessment, Bwala warned that Obi has introduced a concerning and hazardous element into the national political landscape.
