Taraba officials detain suspected illicit gold miners in Bali operation

Taraba state authorities arrested several suspects for illegal gold mining in Gangtu village, pledging further legal action to protect regional mineral resources.

The Anti-Illegal Mining Task Force of Taraba State conducted a successful raid on a gold extraction site in Gangtu, located within the Bali Local Government Area, resulting in multiple arrests. This enforcement mission took place on Saturday, following a similar intervention just days prior.

Authorities reported that the suspects had abandoned the area during the initial visit only to return shortly after. In response, task force members demolished unauthorized temporary shelters found at the location. Emmanuel Jamu, the task force chairman, stated that the action followed an extensive period of undercover surveillance and intelligence operations.

Jamu criticized the miners for ignoring previous warnings, noting that the mission serves to protect the environment and regulate the state’s natural resources. The apprehended individuals are expected to face legal proceedings under the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act. Looking ahead, Jamu confirmed that the task force will maintain its pressure on illegal mining sites statewide and urged local residents to report any suspicious activities to help curb economic sabotage.
