A fire outbreak during the early hours of Tuesday resulted in the destruction of 17 shops at the Sabo Market in Ikorodu. According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the incident was likely triggered by an electrical surge.
Afolabi Olawale, the agency’s Head of Public Affairs, confirmed that the fire began around 1:10 a.m. Emergency teams, including the LASEMA Tiger Squad and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, arrived to find a row of shops already burning. They managed to extinguish the flames, preventing the fire from reaching other sections of the market or nearby structures.
Of the 32 shops in the immediate vicinity, 17 were severely damaged, resulting in the loss of food supplies, groceries, and other inventory. Fortunately, no injuries or deaths occurred. LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, advised business owners to maintain safe electrical systems, avoid overloading circuits, and perform routine maintenance. He also encouraged the public to use the toll-free emergency numbers 112 and 767 in future instances.
