Members of the Police Special Intervention Squad and the Intelligence Response Team revealed that they treated the 44 kidnapped students and teachers from Oriire, Oyo State, as if they were their own children during the dangerous rescue operation. This dedication drove their tactical approach, according to statements made during a debriefing with Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu.
The mission came at a high cost, resulting in the death of Sergeant John Jerome Mbena and leaving several other officers wounded. During a ceremony honoring the team, IGP Disu praised the soldiers and officers for their bravery and professional conduct. He confirmed that injured personnel are recovering in medical facilities supported by the Force, which has also pledged ongoing assistance for the family of the fallen sergeant.
Disu emphasized that the successful rescue was a result of strong inter-agency cooperation. He urged citizens to assist in national security by sharing intelligence, noting that collaborative efforts are essential to combating crime. Superintendent of Police Mohammed Abduramaan stated that the rescue team remained motivated by compassion throughout the mission, noting that hearing the victims’ cries strengthened their resolve to succeed.
