Renowned Nigerian actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, widely known as RMD, has officially aligned himself with the campaign to eliminate gender-based violence throughout Nigeria. The actor announced his commitment after becoming a central figure in the Male Feminists Network this past Friday.
During an event in Abuja, the 65-year-old performer advocated for greater female representation in leadership and government roles. He noted his own production practices, explaining that his film crews are often composed of 80 percent women because he trusts their competence in high-level management.
RMD stressed that men must abandon the objectification of women and instead offer them dignity. He urged his peers to reject violence, noting that respectful communication is far more effective than physical aggression. He suggested that men should treat women with the same care they would extend to their own daughters or spouses.
Highlighting the systemic nature of the issue, Mofe-Damijo argued that the burden of ending abuse should not fall solely on women. He called for men to actively support human rights organizations and contribute their own voices to the movement. Dr. Otive Igbuzor, a gender advocate and public affairs analyst, reinforced this sentiment, noting that influential community and religious leaders are essential partners in curbing these abuses.
