NCC Hosts ATU Summit to Address One Billion Unconnected Africans

The NCC is hosting the African Telecommunication Union to find strategies to connect one billion Africans who currently lack mobile internet access despite being in coverage areas.

The Nigerian Communications Commission is currently hosting representatives from the African Telecommunication Union to address a significant digital divide. Speaking for the Nigerian government, Mr. Ahmed Mohammed Alsukun highlighted that nearly one billion Africans lack mobile internet access, despite being situated within areas that have broadband coverage.

Addressing the lack of connectivity requires more than just building infrastructure; it demands focus on affordability, device accessibility, and digital literacy. During the event, key figures including ATU Secretary General John Omo and Administrative Council Chairperson Nonkqubela Jordan-Dyani emphasized that collective action is vital for continental progress. Mr. Alsukun stressed that Nigeria remains dedicated to fostering regional cooperation to ensure no nation falls behind in the digital era. He noted that a unified African voice is essential for the upcoming International Telecommunication Union Presidential Conference in 2026.

John Omo noted that the union must prioritize legally sound and transparent proposals to ensure effective implementation of past policies. Meanwhile, Ms. Jordan-Dyani, who serves as the Director-General of South Africa’s Department of Communications and Digital Technologies, pointed to the impact of climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, and rapid technological shifts on the economy. She urged governments and private partners to collaborate to strengthen the ATU, which she believes is crucial for the success of the African Continental Free Trade Area and the realization of the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
