New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced he will remain impartial during Sunday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup final. The championship match between Argentina and Spain is set to take place at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
During a press briefing at City Hall, Mamdani explained that he prefers not to pick a side, joking that any team he endorses eventually loses. He highlighted his excitement for the showdown between veterans and rising stars, specifically pointing to the surreal narrative involving Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal.
Mamdani admitted that he initially mistook the viral photograph of a young Yamal being bathed by a younger Messi for an AI-generated image. He noted the irony that these two players are now meeting on the world’s biggest stage. The tournament, which began on June 11 in Mexico City, has reached its final stage after 102 of the 104 planned matches.
New York will serve as the host city for the final clash, where Argentina will attempt to defeat Spain. While these teams were previously expected to play each other in the Finalissima, they will now compete for the most significant trophy in global football.
