With the 2026 World Cup final approaching, authorities in New York and New Jersey have released an air quality health advisory due to drifting wildfire smoke. Haze originating from Canadian wildfires has settled over the region, leading officials to advise locals to minimize physical activities outdoors.
The New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford is scheduled to host the championship match between Spain and Argentina this Sunday. Although Spain arrived in New Jersey on Wednesday following their semi-final win, they conducted outdoor practice on Thursday without voicing public concerns. Argentina is expected to begin their local training sessions this Friday.
Performers preparing for the final have noted the difficult conditions, describing the air as heavy and taxing. Recent NWSL games at Citi Field were impacted by similar haze, requiring players to take additional breaks as mandated by league protocols. Washington Spirit player Trinity Rodman expressed dissatisfaction with the decision to proceed under such conditions.
Despite the smog, there is currently no indication that the open-air stadium will be unable to host the final or its planned half-time show. Meteorologists expect the air quality to improve by Friday, with forecasted rain on Saturday likely to further clear the smoke.
