Fifa officials are currently reviewing match documentation to determine if disciplinary measures are necessary following Argentina’s semi-final victory over England. During the post-match celebrations in Atlanta, Argentine players displayed a banner declaring ‘Las Malvinas son Argentinas,’ or ‘The Falklands are Argentine.’
This dispute regarding the British overseas territory has long been a point of contention between the UK and Argentina. A spokesperson for the governing body confirmed that the independent Disciplinary Committee is investigating the incident to see if it violates the Fifa Disciplinary Code. Notably, the Argentine football association previously received a £20,000 fine in 2014 for displaying the exact same slogan before a match against Slovenia.
The British government has urged Fifa to pursue an investigation, asserting that their commitment to the islands remains steadfast. Conversely, Argentine President Javier Milei described the players’ display as valid while simultaneously stating that on-field events should be kept separate from formal diplomatic affairs. The historical backdrop involves the 1982 conflict, where an invasion of the islands led to a 74-day war that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of soldiers and civilians.
