When Scotland faces Fiji at Murrayfield this Saturday for their final Nations Championship match, the team will pay special tribute to the late Scott Hastings. The beloved centre, who passed away suddenly in May at age 61, earned 65 caps for his country and was widely respected across the sport. During the match, player Ollie Smith will don a unique number 13 jersey featuring gold lettering. The design will incorporate the names of the various clubs Hastings represented alongside his career highlights.
Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend noted that the tribute is intended to ensure Hastings’ legacy as a quintessential Scottish player remains prominent. Townsend fondly recalled watching Hastings excel in that specific jersey during the historic 1990 Grand Slam victory against England. Beyond his international achievements, Hastings was a key figure for the British and Irish Lions during tours of Australia and New Zealand, and he also made 13 appearances for the Barbarians.
A notable moment in his career remains his famous try-saving tackle on Rory Underwood during the 1990 Grand Slam clincher at Murrayfield. Following his induction into the Scottish Rugby Hall of Fame last year, the stadium is expected to draw a crowd of 50,000 for Saturday’s match. This high attendance reflects both the significance of the game and the deep affection fans hold for one of Scottish rugby’s most iconic figures.
